Secure Moving Tips for Packing

Introduction

Packing is the most crucial and technically demanding component of any move. To ensure your items reach their destination safely you must understand the difference between what you pack and how you pack. It is an art and should be treated as such. Here are a few tips for safely packing your next move.

Pack Boxes Efficiently

The smart and efficient packing of boxes should be the core of any packing endeavor. The best way to do this is to pack the boxes in a way that the heaviest items are on the bottom and the box ends up full but not too heavy. This will minimize your costs by not wasting too many boxes and will maximize the volume occupied by each box. Ideally, you would have a couple heavy items at the bottom then lighter items on top of that. For example: in the kitchen, pack a couple frying pans at the bottom of the box then fill the remainder of the box with lighter kitchen items such as utensils and dish rags. Using this method of packing will maintain the integrity of the box and maximize the efficiency of the move.

Pack and Label Your Boxes by Room

Packing your boxes based on the room will make your life MUCH easier when unpacking boxes. Rather than running around the house trying to find a home for each item – pack the boxes with your destination in mind. All of your kitchen contents should be packed together, same with the bedrooms, living room and so on. After the boxes are packed label them with the corresponding room at your destination. Believe us – this will save you a headache in the future!

Never Combine Fragile Items with Heavy Items

If you pack fragile items with heavy, hard or metal items – heartbreak will follow. Be careful not to pack breakable/fragile objects with other non-breakable or sturdier items, especially without judicious use of packing paper or bubble wrap. Secure Moving recommends keeping fragile items together and using lots of packing paper. If you are packing up the kitchen it is best to keep your breakables (such as plates) away from heavy items (such as frying pans). Best practice is to wrap your fragile items in packing paper, stack them carefully on their sides so they don’t rattle around, and fill the remainder of the box with very light items and/or crushed up packing paper.

Use Suitable Packing Supplies

We recommend a few basic packing materials to ensure all items are properly packed. These items include: movers tape (the brown stuff, it’s much easier to use without needing scissors), packing paper (special thin paper used to wrap and protect fragile items such as plates, glasses and art) and furniture blankets (a thick, cushiony blanket which is wrapped around furniture for protection and usually held together with tape). All of these materials can be purchased or rented from Secure Moving.

Protect Your Furniture

Another important step to remember is the safeguarding of your furnishings from accidents or damage. If you have a valuable, fragile piece of furniture, We as a moving company in Vancouver HIGHLY recommends you cover the furniture in a moving blanket and tape it tight to secure it. This will ensure the piece does not get chipped, scraped or damaged in any way. Moreover, it will help protect your walls and floors against any damage. The best way to protect your furniture is to cover all sides, but covering the front is better than nothing! To learn how to wrap furniture you can watch a YouTube video – or hire Secure Moving to give you a hand!

Packing your entire life’s possessions can be a daunting task but if you follow the tips listed above the job will become much easier. You won’t have any problems if your boxes are packed tightly, labeled correctly, the fragile items are separated from the heavy items, you use the right materials and the furniture is protected.
