BC to Alberta Movers

Every Alberta Destination, Priced on What You Send

Tens of thousands of people move between British Columbia and Alberta every year, and nearly all of their furniture crosses the Rockies to get there. Heading for a Calgary suburb or a town in the Peace Country, people ask the same three questions: what it costs, how long it takes and which road the truck will use. Alberta’s 90-day deadlines for your licence and vehicle registration are in our moving out of BC checklist.

Loading anywhere in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley for Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge, Canmore, Banff and Grande Prairie, and bringing Alberta households west to the coast.

How an Interprovincial Move to Alberta Runs

Almost every BC to Alberta move starts the same way: up the Fraser Valley and over the Coquihalla to Kamloops. From there the truck either stays on the Trans-Canada through Rogers Pass and Banff toward Calgary and the south, or turns north on Highway 5 and the Yellowhead for Jasper, Edmonton and the north. Lethbridge moves often take the Crowsnest Highway across the bottom of the province instead.

Because it crosses a provincial line, the move is planned as long-distance work, priced on volume rather than by the hour. You get a survey, an estimate and a delivery window before anything is booked.

  • One inventory — the same numbered list at loading in BC and delivery in Alberta.
  • Shared or dedicated — lower cost with a wider window, or a truck that runs only for you.
  • Estimate from a survey — so the price on moving day reflects what you actually own.
  • Mountain-ready equipment — trucks carry chains and run winter tires from October to April.
  • Storage either side — when the two possession dates do not line up.
  • Replacement coverage — protection that follows the value of what is loaded.

What Decides the Cost of a Move to Alberta

How Much You Send

Volume sets the price on any interprovincial move. A two-bedroom apartment to Red Deer and a two-bedroom apartment to Calgary cost much the same; a two-bedroom and a four-bedroom to the same city do not.

Calgary and Canmore are the shortest runs. Red Deer and Edmonton add 150 to 200 kilometres, and Grande Prairie adds more. Distance mostly lengthens the delivery window, with a smaller effect on the price.

Sharing the Trailer

Shared loads are the economical way to cross the Rockies, because several households split the cost of the truck. If you need a firm arrival day, a dedicated truck is the better buy.

Leases and possession dates cluster at the end of the month in both provinces. Choosing a mid-month date, or a date outside the summer peak, gives you more availability.

Access at Each End

High-rise elevators in Vancouver, steep driveways in Canmore and acreage lanes outside Edmonton each take crew time. The survey records them so the estimate does not change later.

Highway closures in the passes happen most winters. They add hours, occasionally a day, and we keep you posted the whole way. Weather delays change timing, not the price you agreed.

How the Move Works

1. Survey. On site or by video call, so volume and access are both measured.

2. Estimate and window. A price and a delivery window for your Alberta address.

3. Loading in BC. Wrapped, braced for the passes and logged on your inventory.

4. Delivery in Alberta. Unloaded against the list, furniture reassembled, debris removed.

Distance and Road Time

Approximate figures from Metro Vancouver, in good conditions.

DestinationDistance and drive
CanmoreAbout 880 km, 9 to 10 hours
CalgaryAbout 970 km, 10 to 11 hours
LethbridgeAbout 1,050 km, 11 to 12 hours
Red DeerAbout 1,120 km, 11 to 12 hours
EdmontonAbout 1,160 km, around 12 hours
Grande PrairieAbout 1,200 to 1,300 km, 13 to 14 hours

A loaded truck runs slower than these drive times and stops for mandatory rest, so allow an extra day on the longer runs.

How Long It Takes

With a dedicated truck, Calgary and Canmore are usually delivered the day after loading, and Edmonton or Red Deer the day after that. On a shared load, arrival falls inside a window of three to eight days depending on the destination.

Alberta is on Mountain Time, one hour ahead of BC. Delivery windows are quoted in local Alberta time.

BC to Alberta Moving FAQs

How much does it cost to move from BC to Alberta?

It depends mostly on how much you send and whether you share the truck. Distance plays a smaller part: Calgary and Canmore are the shortest runs, Edmonton and Grande Prairie the longest. You get an estimate for your own inventory after a survey.

One to three days with a dedicated truck, depending on the destination, and a three to eight day window on a shared load.

Yes. Westbound moves are surveyed and priced the same way, with delivery anywhere in Metro Vancouver or the Fraser Valley.

The Trans-Canada through Rogers Pass and Banff for Calgary and the south, Highway 5 and the Yellowhead through Jasper for Edmonton and the north, and the Crowsnest Highway for Lethbridge.

It is slower, not worse. Pass closures add time, but winter is also quieter, so dates are easier to get and prices are often lower than in summer. Our guide to moving in winter covers the tire rules and timing.

Yes. Small shipments ride on a shared load, and we price them on the space they actually take.
