Mount Pleasant

Main Street between 2nd and 16th is where old and new sit on the same block. A converted heritage house with three suites can sit next door to a recent concrete building with a loading bay, a booking sheet and a concierge who wants the certificate of insurance before anyone touches the elevator. The mix is the whole problem. Parking is permit-only on most residential streets, so a truck that needs to hold the curb requires a City street occupancy permit. The lanes behind Main and Kingsway are narrow and busy with deliveries all day, which is worth knowing before booking a mid-morning start.

Hastings-Sunrise

Most of this area is 1940s and 50s houses with a back lane, and the lane is usually the better approach. Lots run long and narrow, so the carry from truck to door sets the time rather than the stairs. Then there is the fair. During the PNE the streets around Renfrew and Hastings fill or close, and moves booked in those two weeks of late summer need an earlier start than they would in April.

Kensington-Cedar Cottage

Cedar Cottage is older houses, most with a suite downstairs, on streets that cross two busy arterials. Knight and Victoria carry heavy traffic and neither has room for a truck to sit, so we work off the side streets and lanes. A lot of these houses have a front stair, a landing and a turn, which is the arrangement that slows a sofa down more than a straight flight does.

Renfrew-Collingwood

Joyce-Collingwood has changed faster than anywhere else on the east side. There are now towers around the station with loading bays, elevator bookings and insurance requirements, alongside the older houses filling the rest of the neighbourhood. The two need different plans on the same day, which happens here more often than you would expect.

Riley Park

Riley Park runs from Main up to Queen Elizabeth Park, and the hill matters. Streets west of Main climb, and a truck parked facing the wrong way on a wet day is a problem. Little Mountain has brought new townhouses and low-rise buildings into an area that was almost entirely detached houses, so what works on one street tells you very little about the next. Access varies block to block.
