Neighbourhoods we cover downtown
West End
The West End is the densest part of the city and most of its buildings went up between 1960 and 1980. That means one elevator, often small, and a loading area that has to be booked. Davie, Denman and Robson are busy at every hour and several side streets are one way, so the route in matters as much as the building. Older rental towers rarely have a proper loading bay, which usually means working from the lane.
Yaletown
Two building types, two different days. Converted warehouses on Mainland and Hamilton have freight elevators and generous openings, with cobblestone out front that a loaded dolly does not like. Newer towers have underground parkades with clearances around 1.9 to 2.1 metres, which a five ton will not clear, so we shuttle from the street or bring a smaller vehicle.
Gastown
Gastown is heritage brick, and the buildings were not designed for this. Freight elevators are old, some are operator-run, and a few buildings have none at all. Cobblestone on Water Street is hard on equipment and the curb space is taken by deliveries most of the day. Early starts work better here than anywhere else downtown.
Coal Harbour and the waterfront
Concierge buildings with strict move windows, usually a weekday block of a few hours, booked well ahead. Almost all of them want a certificate of insurance naming the strata before they will release the elevator. Loading bays are good when you get one, and the move hinges on having the booking rather than on the building itself.
False Creek
The south side of False Creek is largely co-op and non-profit housing from the late 1970s, low-rise, with paths rather than roads between buildings. Vehicle access stops well short of many front doors and the seawall is not a route. We walk the approach before estimating hours here more often than in any other part of downtown.
One thing that applies across all of these: a truck occupying the street rather than a bay needs a City of Vancouver street occupancy permit. It costs $138.46 for a seven day period and the City asks for seven to ten business days' notice, so raise it when you book rather than the week of the move.
