Bubble wrap alone won’t protect your breakables you need to pack like a professional if you want your fragile lamps, glassware and tchotchkes to make it from point A to B As well Bulging boxes make it much harder for your movers to pack the moving van. Preventing the moving tragedies is really just a matter of adequate preparation and having the right tools. You can not overpack the boxes and hope that applying extra packing tape will keep them safe.
Packing up valuable crystal, porcelain and other breakables requires some time. Start well in advance of moving day and take the time to properly pack these items it’s worth taking the time to wrap them properly. You should also use quality boxes in various sizes packing paper, bubble wrap, pliable cardboard, scissors, and packing tape. Using small boxes will ensure that they don’t break under the pressure of heavier objects A large table to lay out your items and pack on is also anessential tool.
It’s important to consider the shape and size of the piece. Pack heavier items in the shallower boxes, and fill the big ones with lighter stuff. Other Alternative is to place heavy items at the bottom of deeper boxes and add lighter items on top to ensure that nothing is crushed or broken. Seal up the box and label it FRAGILE on the top or sides or bottom everywhere
In the following we mention some easy tips to pack up your fragile items and keep them safe:
Glasses: You don’t necessarily need box inserts (cellular inserts). Wrap glasses individually and completely with packing paper and place crumpled paper inside the large pieces to diminish empty space and prevent jiggling. For odd-shaped items, be generous with the boxes. Place the heaviest items on the bottom of the box, with lighter pieces on top.
Pictures/Frames – picture frames should be placed in paper lined small to medium boxes, and standing with crumpled paper in between each piece. Wrap frames in packing paper. Top frames with more packing paper to ensure items don’t move around in the box. Place them in a box vertically, alternating with a sheet of bubble wrap. Pictures that are over 3 feet in size should be secured with a moving blanket, plastic wrapped, and moved separately.
Lamps – lamp shades should be boxed (flat side down) separately with lots of paper. Bases can be placed in a large box if necessary and bubble wrap used where appropriate. Wrap the piece completely in bubble wrap, securing with tape.
Plates – plates should be packed vertically in small to medium boxes lined with crumpled packing paper on the bottom and top, alternating with a sheet of bubble wrap. Wrap each plate in bubble wrap and secure with tape. Place paper in between the standing plates. Do not overpack the box.
Finally, communicate with the movers which boxes require extra care. Use a moving vehicle or storage area with climate control if you won’t be immediately heading to your new home, as moisture can build up and potentially damage wood, leather and other materials.
